Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry refers to when breasts are in different shape or size than each other and it is a very common condition among women. Although almost every woman has breast asymmetry condition, most of them do not feel discomfort about the condition for it is not easily noticeable. However in some cases, asymmetry can be severe and more noticeable, breast asymmetry correction surgery may be needed.

Asymmetry can be structural, congenital, or caused by post-breastfeeding. %100 symmetry can not be always possible however closest results can be provided by the operation. If the desired results can not be met, revision operations are also possible. After revision, full recovery takes between 1 to 2 months.

Breast Asymmetry

Why Do I Need Breast Asymmetry Correction?

The reasons for breast asymmetry are as follows;

  • During puberty, one breast may develop slower while the other develops faster. For the asymmetric appearance may cause psychological problems, operations can be performed before the age of 18.
  • The size changes between breasts may differ during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • The size differences caused by weight loss may not be the same for each breast.
  • The size differences caused by weight gain may not be the same for each breast.
  • Some medical conditions may affect only one breast or, may affect them both differently causing asymmetry.
  • Surgical operations due to cancer may cause breast asymmetry
  • Aging can cause volume loss in breasts and asymmetry as well.

What Are The Problems Caused by Breast Asymmetry?

Problems caused by breast asymmetry are as follows:

  • Bad posture and spine damage
  • Lack of confidence due to different-sized breasts
  • Problems with proper clothing
  • Permanent usage of padded bra

Is it Normal To Have Asymmetric Breasts?

Considering breast asymmetry as normal depends on the size difference. If the difference between breasts does not cause a different cup size, then it is considered normal. Problems that do not cause different cup size does not require surgical operations. But if there is a difference between cup sizes, first the reason behind the condition must be understood and treatment methods must be determined depending on the need and condition of the patient. Asymmetric Breast operations have permanent results to boost patients’ confidence, and operations also impact positively mental health leading to better social life.

What are Asymmetric Breast Types?

Breast Asymmetry types are as follows:

  • If one breast is normal size and the other one is small, the smaller breast is volumed by fat additions to equalize. Also, it is common for the normal-sized breast to be saggy in this condition, after equalizing the sizes, normal breasts should be lifted to eliminate the sagging.
  • If one breast is normal size and the other one is big, the bigger breast must be reduced in size to equalize.
  • If one breast is bigger than normal and the other one is smaller than normal, it is preferred to use an implant for the smaller one and a reduction for the bigger one to equalize them in size.
  • In the adolescent era, sometimes one breast may not develop due to congenital factors. Undeveloped or underdeveloped muscle tissue underneath the breasts may cause this condition. Implants can provide a treatment for this problem.

What  Is The Procedure Before Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Procedures before Breast Asymmetry Correction  are as follows;

  • Breast ultrasonography is required for those under the age of 40, and mammography for those older than 40.
  • After the surgery, patients are kept under supervision in the hospital so they must have a companion.
  • 1 week before the operation, patients must stop taking aspirin and similar medications. If the patient is on prescribed medication, the doctor must be informed and continue as the doctor advises.
  • Patients must quit smoking before the surgery. To start smoking, the patient must wait for some time after the surgery.
  • When checking in for the surgery patient should prefer comfortable clothes and must avoid wearing makeup, using hair products such as hair gel, and wearing any jewels.
  • Patients must stop eating and drinking 6 hours before the surgery.

How is Breast Asymmetry Correction Surgery Planned?

When planning breast asymmetry correction surgery, the first step is determining the cause of the asymmetry and examining the anatomic structure of the breast to see deficiencies. Also, the chest structure is examined. The specialist decides the right method and plans the process to provide ideal volume and shape and equal size for both breasts. Patients’ age, skin condition, breast size, and shape, and nipple location are also considered factors during the planning. Patients are informed about the whole procedure.

What is the Breast Asymmetry Treatment?

For the treatment, the first step is to determine which method to perform to provide the ideal shape for the breasts. Breast asymmetry can be treated with some additional methods such as breast augmentation, breast implants, lifting, or fat injection. If the breast has a volume loss problem, breast implants are preferred to provide the volume. If the nipple or areola has a sagging problem, lifting with or without implants is preferred. Problems caused by pectoral muscle underdevelopment can be treated by fat injections to eliminate the asymmetry. Surgery can be performed under either local or general anesthesia depending on the condition of the patient and the method. Depending on the method, the operation takes between half an hour to 2 hours.

Is There A Surgical Scar After the Breast Asymmetry Correction Operation?

The scar after the breast asymmetry operation used to be a T shape scar, however, these days it is an I shape. In the past, the incision made was in a T shape causing the same shape scar after the surgery, but recently to minimize the scar, incisions are made in an I shape. Smaller incision size leads to smaller scars.

What is the Breast Asymmetry Recovery Like?

The recovery process after the Breast Asymmetry is as follows;

  • Depending on the operation, patients may be checked out on the very same day or may be supervised for a day at the hospital.
  • If implants are used, the patient must restrain arm movements a few days after the operation.
  • 2 days after the operation the area is dressed and after 7 days bandages are removed.
  • After the breast asymmetry correction operation, swellings, sensation loss on the nipple, and pinkish color change may be experienced. However, they fade in a short period.
  • Patients can go back to their daily routine after about 3 to 4 days.
  • Patients must wear a sports bra and a special corset both advised by the doctor for the following 6 weeks after the surgery. As an exception, Gynecomastia patients do not need to do so.
  • Patients must lie on their backs or sides in the following 8 to 10 days after the surgery.
  • Patients must quit smoking for some time after the surgery, and if possible, quit completely.
  • Patients must avoid heavy physical and sports activities for 3 months after the surgery.

After the Breast Asymmetry correction operations, patients must avoid lifting heavy objects for some time.
